Telecom Engineer

JOB SUMMARY - ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES
Performs a variety of engineering tasks under general supervision of a senior level engineer in design, installation, integration, testing, operations, sustainment and maintenance of telecommunication system hardware and software. Work will involve some evaluation, originality, or ingenuity and is generally performed as a member of a development, sustainment, and operations & maintenance team.

1. Conducts research and reference reading to assist higher-level engineers in obtaining technical information; keeps informed of currently approved standards, codes, and procedures.

2. Performs engineering tasks that are varied, with established deadlines and may be somewhat difficult in character.

3. Generates and executes test plans focusing in the field of telecommunication systems.

4. Identifies or develops methods for instrumenting and capturing telecommunication system metrics and data to determine system performance.

5. Using computer-assisted test methods; conducts laboratory investigations and develops models of telecommunication systems.

6. Assists in preparation of reports, correspondence, or technical studies.

7. Prepares, delivers, and submits technical presentations to team members and management.

8. Performs other related duties and assignments as directed.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the guidance of a senior level engineer provides engineering support in the design, installation, and test of telecommunication systems with specific responsibilities including:

1. Development of system diagrams and configuration documentation.

2. Design and develop instrumentation systems.

3. Develop and execute telecommunication system testing.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position predominately involves working in an office environment with some field work.  Routine travel to remote locations is required.  The position requires working around electrified equipment associated with telecommunication systems.  There is occasional lifting of equipment weighting up to 40 lbs.

REQUIREMENTS - EDUCATION, TECHNICAL AND WORK EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited academic institution with 2 years of related engineering experience, or have an accredited Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering.

The candidate must have a professional knowledge of applicable engineering concepts and principles and a familiarity with related engineering fields. The candidate must have a practical knowledge of test methods and practices sufficient to perform routine to more complex engineering procedures and to prepare or make minor modifications of standard test procedures or test equipment work instructions. The candidate should have a working knowledge of computer systems and computer-based engineering tools and must possess planning/organizing skills. The candidate will be required to qualify for and maintain a government security clearance and must have a valid, current state driver's license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with and a working knowledge of standard telecommunication systems and protocols including SS7, ISDN, SIGTRAN, and SIP is desired.  Knowledge of PBX and CO design, integration, operations, and test is desired.  The candidate must also have the desire to learn new telecommunication technologies and remain knowledgeable with the current technologies, practices, and systems.
